Colonel Joseph Hemphill Wilson
101st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry
Born 16 May 1820 in North Sewickley Township (now Franklin), Beaver Co., PA; son of Thomas and Agnes (Hemphill) Wilson. He graduated Jefferson College in Canonsburg, PA. Admitted to the bar on 5 June 1850. For three years he was the District Attorney of Beaver County. Served in the PA Militia prior to the Civil War. He was elected as a member of the PA House of Representatives from 1856 to 1861. Commissioned at age 41, assuming command of the 101st PA on 17 Sept 61. Mustered in 4 Oct 61. Commanded the regiment at Yorktown & Williamsburg, VA. Died 30 May 1862 of Typhoid fever near Roper's Church, VA. His remains were brought home by his brother, John Hays Wilson, and interred in the Zelienople Cemetery, Butler Co., PA. Military Photo | Headstone
